What is Mud Cloth?
Mud Cloth is a direct translation of the Mali word bògòlanfini. Bogo: “earth” or “mud". Lan: “with” Fini: "cloth.”The Process:
The Malian cotton fabric traditionally dyed with fermented mud. The manufacture of this cloth is a long painstaking, laborious, process. HISTORY: It has an important place in traditional Malian culture and has, more recently, become a symbol of Malian cultural identity. This ancient 12th-century textile was originally considered a peasants cloth. Each pattern represents a different story and holds secrets that are passed down from mother to daughter. A reoccurring trend in these patterns offer variations of protection or safety. CARE: Mud cloth can be washed in cold water without much color loss. However, as the dyes are natural and may wash out over time, dry cleaning is preferable.
